Multimedia files illustrating the potential capabilities of LCE materials are found on this page. Here short movies of LCE from research done in Prof. Peter Palffy's lab are provided for download. A link to an informative lecture on LCE by Heino Finkelmann is found at the bottom of the page. Movies are available for download in the 'avi; format.

Light induced bending of LCE film

A nematic side chain LCE film was doped with a dye, & then exposed to 60ms pulses (600 mW) from a laser. The rise time and relaxation times are 20ms and 70ms respectively. download 51 MB

LCE that swims in the dark

A dye doped nematic side chain LCE floating on water is exposed to laser light (1.1 mw/cm 2, 3mm beam waist ). The LCE film 'swims' out of the i1luminated area. download 48 MB reference

Light induced LCE film curvature

A disc shaped LCE film is exposed to laser light (1.1 mw/cm 2, 3mm beam waist ), showing a 'pumping' response. download 20MB

LCE fish

A dye doped nematic side chain LCE immersed in water is exposed to laser light (1.1 mw/cm 2, 3mm beam waist ) from either the left or right. The film behaves like a fish's tail. download 71MB
